August 23, 1903 - DGS Neptune leaves Halifax on an expedition to enforce Canadian sovereignty in the eastern Arctic. The Neptune Expedition was the first scientific expedition to the Arctic and formally took possession of Ellesmere, Beechy, and Somerset islands for Canada in 1904.
